In this panel discussion at the Diplomatische Akademie Wien, I talked about possible post-war scenarios for Gaza, the alarming humanitarian situation, the necessity to think about entry points for dialogue and to revive a comprehensive peace process, as difficult as this might seem at the moment.
The historic experience for Palestinians has been that they have felt left out from negotiations time and again. While we have seen a number of bilateral treaties between Israel and some Arab states – starting with the 1977/78 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel – a comprehensive agreement has always been left out. As this war is ongoing, European states are significantly loosing credibility in the Middle East, North Africa and also in the Global South, while Palestinian civilians – children in particular – have nowhere else to go. And while all of this is alarming and needs to be addressed urgently it is important to always remember: this must not lead to a rise of Anti-Semitism in the public sphere. We need to continue to speak out firmly when such episodes arise.
