Together with Wolfgang Dietrich and Norbert Koppensteiner I attended the annual Meeting of the Working Group Curriculum and Didactics of the German Association for Peace and Conflict Studies, hosted by the Chair for Political Science and Peace Studies at the University of Augsburg. We are very much looking forward to hosting this event in Innsbruck in 2018!
Together with Clara Maier I published a newspaper article on the topic of Gender and peace building in Libya in the Tiroler Tageszeitung. From November 9th – 12th I attended this year’s Hammamet Conference in Tunisia on “Building Peaceful and Inclusive Societies” as part of theEgyptian delegation . In my presentation “Reintegrating former Combatants: A Conflict Transformation Perspective” in the Panel on “Reintegration and Social Cohesion” I proposed an elicitive approach to conflict transformation that focuses on relational security and the different layers of conflict beyond the apparent episodes of violence, when addressing the complexities of current conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa.

Nach über zehn Jahren nationaler Spaltung haben sich die beiden verfeindeten palästinensischen Fraktionen Fatah und Hamas vergangene Woche darauf geeinigt, ein bereits 2011 ausgearbeitetes Versöhnungsabkommen in Kraft zu setzen. Dieser Schritt wurde auf den Straßen von Gaza mit Jubelszenen gefeiert. Was bedeutet dies aber nun für den Nahost-Konflikt? Um das Potenzial dieser neuen Situation von womöglich historischer Bedeutung einzuordnen, ist es nötig, die verschiedenen internen und externen Faktoren dieses Übereinkommens zu analysieren. Mein ausführlicher Gastbeitrag zum nationalen Schulterschluss zwischen Hamas und Fatah wurde am 21. Oktober 2017 in der Printausgabe der Tiroler Tageszeitung gedruckt. At the 2017 International Institute for Peace Education I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate a Workshop on the topic of John Paul Lederach’s Moral Imagination, a book that is very dear to my heart and central to my reserach, along with my dear colleague Alejandra Barrera, who taught me quite a lot about the art of Haiku writing.
Mit der politischen Isolation Katars durch seine arabischen Nachbarstaaten erleben die Golf-Staaten derzeit die größte diplomatische Krise seit Jahrzehnten. Das Eskallationspotential dieser Situation sollte nicht unterschätzt werden. Dazu habe ich eine ausführliche Analyse für das Format “Blick von Außen”, Seite 20, der Samstagsausgabe der Tiroler Tageszeitung geschrieben vom 1. Juli 2017 geschrieben.

“Die Universität Innsbruck, unter der Leitung von Adham Hamed, organisierte dankenswerter Weise diese Exkursion. Es ging um multi-perspektivisches Lernen, was aus dem Arabischen Frühling wurde, der am Tahir in Ägypten das alte Regime stürzte. Es ging darum, was die AktivistInnen der damaligen Protestbewegung heute tun, welche Zugänge PolitikerInnen zu Politik haben, was nationale und internationale Organisationen über die Zeit denken und wie sie sie mitgestalten wollen. Religion war zwar kein direktes Thema der Gespräche, sie war aber stets präsent, insbesondere als hoch problematisches Mittel der Politik.”

From April 29th until May 5th, 2017, I will participate at the regional Forum on Youth Participation and Civic Engagement in Alexandra, Egypt. The Forum will be organized by the Swedish Institute Alexandria and the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute and aims at discussing forms of enhancing political participation in pluralistic societies. I am very much looking forward to returning to this beautiful city.
